The size of a common litter is eight or nine dogs, but Terrie, a four-year-old Rottweiler in the United Kingdom, has given birth to 18 puppies! Unfortunately, one of the puppies was stillborn and another passed away two days after birth, according to Telegraph.
However, the remaining16 puppies, 10 females and six males, are healthy and weigh between 1 to 1.5 lbs. They haven’t opened their eyes yet, but are “drinking 1.5 oz of puppy milk every four hours.”
Their owner, Nicolette Morris, told Telegraph,
“Terrie was absolutely huge before she gave birth but I never dreamt she would have so many. It was staggering. They just kept on coming. I began to wonder if she’d ever stop. No-one has heard to a Rottweiler having more pups. It’s certainly a British record….”
“I know Rottweilers have got a bad name but I love the breed. They’ve got such fantastic temperaments, I’d recommend them to anyone.”
In February, another Rottweiler, Tara, gave birth to 13 puppies, but they were born at the SSPCA center because Tara “rejected them.” (Telegraph)
Currently, the Guiness World Records noted a Neapolitan Mastiff to have 24 puppies in January 2005.
