Dogs are definitely funnier than cats, according to “America’s Funniest Home Videos” executives, the Associated Press reported. The ever-popular television series which is beginning its 20th year on ABC next month, found that dogs are the #1 crowd pleasers, and they give all the credit to wiener dogs, Chihuahuas, and Pugs.
One of the most memorable videos displayed a Chihuahua in a sink taking a bath.
“It was the homeliest dog, big bulging eyes that looked in opposite directions, his tongue was hanging out, and he was soaking wet, the sweetest thing,” said co-executive producer and writer Todd Thicke.
“You weren’t even sure it was an animal,” added executive producer Vin Di Bona.
Over the past 19 years that the show has been on-air, 260 animal videos won a total of $2.2 million for their family/videographer. More than half of the winners (136) were dogs, and their prize money totaled $1.4 million. Thirty-four cats won $210,000, 22 birds shared $115,000 and nine squirrels even won a shared prize of $54,000.
AFHV’s co-executive producers and writer Todd Thicke, Michelle Nasraway, and executive producer Vin Di Bona, have learned many odd things about animals like “never hold food next to a monkey. Don’t stand behind a horse. If you put a bowl of food in the middle of a group of puppies they will move around it clockwise. Dogs tend to howl at pianos.”
Thicke concluded by saying,
“People love their pets and are proud of them and have trained them to do amazing tricks.”
Other past animal winners have been raccoons, giraffes, goats, horses, monkeys, bears, hamsters, llamas, mice, praying mantises and whales.
