The Las Vegas City Council has proposed a new ordinance that would create stricter requirements for pet shops. The new ordinance is called Bill No. 2009-44 and it’s scheduled to be heard by the committee on November 3, 2009.
According to Pet Product News, under the new bill, pets over the age of four months would have to be spayed or neutered- unless a handler has a fancier permit or is medically unable to undergo the procedure. All pets would have to be microchipped to ensure all lost pets can be returned to their original owner.
As for pet shop owners in Las Vegas, they would have to provide the name and address of the buyers (as well as the address of the pet if it’s going to a different home), the breed and age of the pet and a description every quarter. If the bill is passed, failure to obey the law could mean losing a business license.
The American Kennel Club said the proposed ordinance is “unreasonable” and burdensome” because potential pet owners would begin to look elsewhere for their pets.
