Mustaine was released from Metallica due to rumors of his overly obsessive drinking habits. However, Mustaine believes there was more to the story.
According to the Post Chronicle, Mustaine believes he was kicked out of Metallica due to an incident that involved his dog. It happened over two decades ago, but Mustaine still remembers the bizarre day and shared it with a Norwegian Rock blog called Lydverket.

Mustaine was a pot dealer back in the day, and people used to steal from his apartment when he would be at a show. So, Mustaine decided to get two dogs as guards and pets. He brought one dog to a rehearsal and his dog jumped and placed his paws on the car of Metallica’s former bassist, Ron McGovney. This caused a shocking reaction from James Hetfield, the lead singer.
According to Mustaine, Hetfield kicked his dog “right in it’s side.” This began a feud between the duo. Mustaine punched Hetfield in the face and Mustaine said, “I think that was the route of why I lost my job.”
