Last week, we reported that Boomer, a three-year-old Landseer Newfoundland, applied to the Guinness Book of Records to be a contender for the World’s Tallest Dog. Boomer is 28 inches tall, weighs 130 to 150 pounds and measures 7 feet long from nose to tail (3 feet at the shoulders). After seeing Boomer on the news, Dave Nasser, a realtor in Tucson, AZ, and his public relations friends began to promote his Great Dane named George and Fox News was there to cover it.

At four-years-old, George is 42 inches tall and weighs 245 pounds.

Nasser told Fox News that George isn’t really a dog, but more of a “sidekick.”

“Great Danes are inherently lapdogs. He really thinks he’s a tiny dog and wants to sit on your lap all the time. He wants to be right with you. Danes aren’t outside dogs. They’re a little wimpy. You can’t just buy one and expect to put it outside. They really are inside dogs and they want to be right with people.”

George can eat over “100 pounds of food every three weeks” and his dog poop can weigh “4 pounds or more.”

The Guinness World Records 2010 edition, which was published on September 17, 2009 lists Gibson, a Harlequin Great Dane, as the World’s Tallest Dog, but Gibson died on August 7, 2009 after battling osteosarcoma. He was measured as 42.2 inches tall.

Currently, no dog has claimed the title as World’s Tallest Dog.

A Great Dane averages 28-34 inches according to Big Paws Only.

Boomer, a three-year-old Landseer Newfoundland, is a contender for the World’s Tallest Dog, the Associated Press reports. While an average male Newfoundland is 28 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs 130 to 150 pounds, Boomer measures 3 feet tall at the shoulders and 7 feet long from nose to tail.

His owner, Caryn Weber, told Associated Press that Boomer “drinks from the kitchen faucet, stares eye-to-eye with a driver in a car, and a 20-lb bag of kibble lasts only a few weeks.”

She also mentioned that “he comes into the house and his tail is so high everything gets knocked around.”

His name:
Boomer was nicknamed Ripley, after Ripley’s “Believe It or Not!” by Weber’s sons because he had multiple surgeries due to an abdominal hernia. However, he grew remarkably quickly that all the stitches ripped. As he grew, his barks became “deep” and “hoarse,” so they renamed him to Boomer.

Gibson, the previous title holder for the World’s Tallest Dog, sadly passed away in August 2009 after battling osteosarcoma.

Gibson, the spokesdog for K9Grass® has succumbed to bone cancer on Friday, August 7th at 10 AM. Gibson was seven-years-old. He was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in April 2009 and had his front right leg amputated. After the surgery and chemotherapy, the tests showed no signs of cancer. Last week, Sandy Hall, Gibson’s owner, was told that the cancer had spread to his lungs and spine.

Gibson’s veterinarian, Dr. Peter Walsh, said,

“Last week Gibson began having trouble using his back legs. X-rays showed that the cancer had spread to his spine and his lungs. Ms. Hall made the very difficult decision based on her concern and love for Gibson to have him humanely euthanized. Gibson died peacefully in the loving arms of Ms. Hall.”

Ms. Hall continues to work with “Three Paws for the Cause” with Brewster, Gibson’s son, to raise awareness of canine cancer and to keep Gibson’s legacy alive. They are currently working on plans to tour the U.S. on a bus with ForeverLawn (makers of K9Grass).

Brewster will follow the steps of his dad and become the official spokesdog of K9Grass. He is 38 inches tall at the shoulder- 4.6 inches shorter than when Gibson earned the title as “World’s Tallest Dog,” but he’s 165 lbs, 40 lbs heavier than when Gibson turned one-years-old.

If you’d like to help pay for Gibson’s medical bills and funeral expenses, please visit K9Grass or Remember Gibson, where you can also donate to canine cancer.

Writing this post has brought tears to my eyes and we want to extend our condolences to the Gibson family.

If you have fond memories of Gibson, you can write a note on his guestbook.
